Assateague Backcountry Exploration Tour
May 21 @ 7:30 am – 2:30 pm

Assateague Island is a 33-mile-long barrier island – completely protected and totally wild. There aren’t many places like it left in our world. Take the time necessary to explore it as it truly deserves!

The Paddle: “Old Ferry Landing to Pine Tree, and Back”

Who: Intermediate to advanced paddlers who are in good physical shape. Participants should expect to paddle in excess of ten miles and be in the kayak almost six hours.

Boats: single only (NO tandems), must be 14’ or longer. If you plan on using your own, contact us ahead of time to determine that it will be suitable for this trip. It’s a long a paddle, and unfair to the other paddlers, to have to wait for kayaks that are inappropriate for the distance we will be traveling.

Personal Floatation Devices are required.

Clothing: As always, dress for the water, not the air. Typical May water temperatures are in the 60’s, as is the air. Synthetic active wear is recommended; cotton clothing is highly discouraged. Shoes are required, closed heal shoes are recommended. A spare long sleeve shirt and convertible pants (with zip-off legs) are good to have for insect protection. Should you have questions, send us an email or give us a call.

We will provide lunch but you’ll need to bring your own:

  • Water: a minimum of 2 quarts per person
  • Insect repellent
  • Sunscreen
  • Camera/ birdwatching/ pony watching equipment
  • A small fishing pole (there will be a few minutes to wet your line, but this is not a fishing trip)
  • Snacks

As with any day of paddling, weather conditions (especially wind) govern the exact itinerary. But here is the basic plan:

8:30 AM- On the water at Old Ferry Landing. Head south to the Tingle Narrows area. A brief rest stop and time to explore the coves, creeks and marshes.

11:00 AM- Arrive at the Pine Tree area. Time built in to explore, and for lunch.

12:30 PM- Start returning north, exploring “inland route”, various topography, creeks, marshes etc.

2:30 PM- Return to the Old Ferry Landing.

Reservations required. Please call 302.539.7999 or book online! (please choose the “Kayak & SUP Classes & Special Tours” tab at the top of the booking page to locate this tour)
